The flagship Xperia smartphone is priced at $1599.99 in America (on preorder), or P1,299 for UK customers (available now). It boasts impressive specs, including a 4K OLED display with Sony’s 21:9 aspect ratio (which is said to be ideal for gamers), an optical 85-125mm telephoto lens, and the ability of recording 4K video at 120fps. This phone must be excellent for the price. How does it perform?

The Xperia 1 IV’s design is instantly recognisable. It has a tall, thin form factor that accommodates the 21:9 screen. It is also very narrow, so it is easy to grip even for people with small hands.

It is difficult to use this phone one-handed. The phone is 71mm in width and 165mm high. You will need to have large hands to reach the top and bottom of the screen using a thumb. My small hands meant that I had to use my thumbs to move the phone around in my hand. Despite this, many modern phones are difficult to use one-handed. Sony has some protections (see below).

The Xperia 1IV is very thin at 8.2mm, and light at 185g. The handset comes with water and dust resistance certification, specifically an IP65/68 rating. For 30 minutes, the device is immersed in tap water for 1.5m. The equivalent at home might be accidental immersion in a container filled with tap water for 30 minutes.
